BMX Bikers – Is There A Manufacturing Fault With The WTP Arcade 20?

Hello.

I’m asking on behalf of a friend who bought her son a WTP Arcade 20 10 Black BMX Bike as a Christmas present. I know nothing about BMX or the bikes themselves so be gentle with me!

Since Christmas,my friends son has had three injuries. The first was when the pedal snapped and he fell sideways grazing and hurting himself. The second time was when the gear-wheel malfunctioned and somehow caused him to go over the handlebars into a busy main road. The third was when something went wrong with the handlebars themselves which detached themselves whilst doing a small manoevre.

The bike has been sent back to the shop and it currently sits awaiting its fourth repair. I would specifically like to know if there is a fault in the design of a WTP Arcade 20 10 Black BMX bike.I would also like to know if there have ever been any UK reviews of this bike and would you please kindly send me any links to this effect.Lastly, where is this bike made?

Any help and direction you can give me would really be appreciated. The young lad of 12 whose the owner of the bike doesn’t understand why it rarely works, and his Mum whose spent nearly £300 on this bike which hardly ever works either but for which her son has been injured.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

There are no specific manufacturing defects with WTPs current round of bikes. Generally a manufacturing flaw would on apply directly to WTP if it was a frame or fork or other part manufactured directly by WTP (which are manufactured by Haro)
BMX is a rough sport that is tough on both bikes and riders. The problems you are describing sound like rider error or assembly issues. A snapped pedal spindle actually requires a fair bit of force, it seems likely the spindle either pulled free from the crank arm (probably due to poor installation) or the pedal body itself separated from the spindle. I would need more information on the "gear-wheel" malfunction you have described and the handlebars likely slipped at the clamp or the stem itself pulled free from the steerer.
Again. BMX riding is hard on bikes and hard on riders. Kids are hard on bikes. It’s a winning combination.

Any suggestions on a good cheap mountain biking shoe? SPD?

Going clipless. Got some crank bros candy SL pedals. Now i need a good pair of shoes to go with them. Cheap. I read reviews that say good walking shoe or good commuter. I want a good Mtn shoe. i deal in dirt and rocks and roots. Any suggestions?

Try eBay or Craiglist. You should be able to get something cheap.
